I have been an age group contender throughout my triathlon career spanning over 15 years. During this time I have lost track of the numerous Half Ironman, Olympics and Sprint Triathlon races I have done. I do, however, recall the six Ironman events I have under my belt including the big daddy in Hawaii twice.
My method for success is quite simple. To survive the swim with the leaders still in site and then play my “trump card” being the bike to put as much distance as possible on my competition…. essentially turning them into dots (the smaller the better)! Once off the bike, I hang on for the run. This tactic has awarded me many age group titles and a few overall wins over the years. Now that I’m over forty, it has given me overall master in most local races I enter. Wow, the joys of mastery!
The thing I enjoy the most about triathlon is the lifestyle it brings about; the sense of accomplishment, the confidence, the discipline, and fitness that splashes over into everyday life. I also love persuading others into this sport and watch them become real fast.
