Even though I was not a swimmer, biker, or runner, I did my first triathlon, a Bud Light Olympic, in 1986. After a couple more I decided to focus on other passions. Over the next twenty years I enjoyed success in a number of other sports all while storing the thought of doing an ironman sometime down the road. Watching the Ironman race on TV (dating back to high school) was all the motivation I needed. Finally, after two decades away from the sport I decided it was time to fulfill one of my longtime dreams and compete in the 2007 Couer D’Alene Ironman. With limited knowledge, inadequate training, and a “can do” attitude, I limped across the finish line and knew this would be my new sport.
Coming from an ultra competitive family I learned early on how to compete even if I was outmatched in talent. Since my first ironman I’ve been encouraged by the fact I continue to get faster in each race. I enjoy the longer distances and bigger races to gauge my progress against other top athletes. This year I hope to achieve my ultimate triathlon goal of qualifying for the Ironman World Championship race in Kona.
